Do you want to read kids a book about hope? Do you maybe feel like you sometimes need a little bit of hope to keep you going at the moment? Today is the National Day of Reflection, so I thought this would be a good book to post about.
I will admit it now, I am a huge fan of Smriti Halls and David Litchfield has to be one of my favourite illustrators, so this might appear a bit gushing at times! (I’m not sorry.) Have a look here to find out a bit more about me and my background.

Best book about hope- What is it actually about?
A little girl and a fox start the story in the rain and travel through the passing of days, from a place of darkness and despair to a place of hope. It starts with “rain before rainbows and clouds before sun, to dreams that are hopeful.” Whilst some days might shake us, there is light and the end of the tunnel.
This book is undoubtedly the best kids book about hope that I have come across. There is an overriding message in this book is that this shall pass. We might encounter hardships and tough days but it will not last forever. There will be days full of promise until the morning is bright.
Questions you might like to ask the children about the book
- How do you think the little girl and fox feel at the start of the story? I think they feel…. because
- Why is the title of the book Rain Before Rainbows? The book is called Rain Before Rainbows because… For example,…..
- What is the message of the book and how can it make us look at our lives differently?
Illustrations
Here is a sneak peek inside. Each of David Litchfield’s illustrations is exquisite, colourful and echoes the meaning of the beautiful words. Yes, there may be storm clouds but there will also be sunshine. We have something to hope for.

This book would be a wonderful addition to any bookshelf!
