Nen and the Lonely Fisherman is unlike most children’s books that I have read before. If you haven’t read it yet, you’re in for a treat!
It is a book about loneliness and the quest for true love. Nen, the Merman feels empty. So at night he sings a song of hope. Will he find what he is looking for?
Nen is warned about the perils of the land but every night he goes in search of something or someone who will fill his heart. But Ernest also spends his nights staring out to sea. So they both are together in their loneliness.
But Nen has been warned about the dangers of humans, who are destroying the ocean. Will he listen to his father’s advice or to his heart?
This book is LGBTQ book is poignant and I’m sure will speak to many children and adults alike. It is an own voices book by Ian Eagleton. Hopefully helping them to feel that they can themselves in the books that they read. Please make sure to read own voices reviews too.
As well as the important and beautiful message, the illustrations are stunning. James Mayhew is one of my favourite illustrators and this book does not disappoint! From the shimmery front cover, to the vivid colours inside. The beauty of the illustrations reflects the nature of the story.
