Cogheart by Peter Bunzl: A review

Cogheart by Peter Bunzl image of children's middle grade book.

What is Cogheart about?

Cogheart is a great book! Set in a world with mechanical animals and creatures, it follows Lily whose father has gone missing. Together with her friend Robert and mechanical fox, Malkin, she goes in search of him.

Robert and Lily find friends and foe along the way. Who can they trust? Is finding her father’s invention worth the price that they are going to pay? Why are Roach and Mould after them?

What did I think of the book?

This is a really imaginative book. Think Victorian London, with mechanical creatures and clockworks. It very much has a steampunk vibe. But also covers topics such as loss and grief. Parts of it are a little gruesome, so keep this in mind, if your child is reading this book. I would recommend this to children 10+ maybe even 11+ depending on the child.

There is lots of action, mystery and adventure. It is definitely one of my favourites that I have read as an adult. So it comes highly recommended!

Who wrote Cogheart?

The book was written by Peter Bunzl. He is also a film maker and animator and has published a range of different children’s books. I have yet to read any of his others but I am keen to after reading Cogheart.
