Sky Song by Abi Elphinstone: A book review

Sky Song by Abi Elphinstone, middle grade children's book.

What is Sky Song about?

Sky Song by Abi Elphinstone is a fantastic book for any fantasy loving children. Set in a kingdom called Erkenwald, ruled by an evil Ice Queen. It follows Eska, a girl whose memories have been stolen and who breaks free from a musical box. She meets Flint, his sister Blu, together with a range of creatures. Together can they break the kingdom free of the Ice Queen’s grasp and reunite the tribes?

What did I think of the book?

Sky Song is a brilliant one for escapism. Abi’s descriptions are so vivid that I felt like I had been transported to an icy kingdom. Like I could see the tribes, the inventions and the action as if I were watching it as a film.

It’s really fast moving and a real page turner. The main characters are also likeable and three dimensional. It has a really strong message of which runs throughout the book too.

I’d really recommend this to any children who are fans of fantasy books like The Northern Lights, Harry Potter or more contemporary fantasy.

Have you read this book? If so, what did you think?

I had read Dreamsnatcher previously (a few years ago) and really enjoyed it (there isn’t a review but it is worth checking out) but the world building in Sky Song is another level.
